Simple Remedies
Finding yourself along the trail with an unexpected ache or pain can be
unpleasant. Quite often, however, a specific herb or food will soothe these
minor ailments or injuries. Taking good care of yourself with nature’s own
remedies helps to keep you in balance.
Commonsense Advice
The recipes in this book are geared toward natural foods that help protect and restore
the body and mind in a gentle way. This section describes a few simple natural
remedies that can be used to help treat some common aches or pains you may
encounter on the trail. These remedies are taken internally in the form of a tea or a
pellet, or topically in the form of a gel, cream, poultice, or compress.
This section is meant not to replace any standard first aid or medical manual (see
Books & Web Sites, , for some good ones), but rather to calm, soothe, and
perhaps prevent discomforts or minor ailments. Use common sense. In the mountains,
if the problem or situation looks serious, go to a lower elevation as soon as possible
and seek professional medical attention. If you are taking prescription medication or if
you are pregnant, consult with your pharmacist before taking any herbal remedies.
To help keep yourself healthy from the moment you leave the trailhead, follow these
tips: Drink lots of water; the average person should drink up to 4 quarts of fluid
throughout the day. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and remember to take rest and snack
breaks when necessary. Dress properly for the weather and stay dry. Stay active and
keep a steady, sustainable pace. Keep yourself well, remember to breathe, and above
all, take care.
