Growing up in a hectic household, breakfast was pretty much whatever I could find
quickly. I was so busy between school and basketball that I didn’t have much time to
eat breakfast. I often just grabbed something on my way out the door.
Once I began playing pro basketball, I came to realize that I needed to eat a morning
meal that would give me energy for the hours of practice I put in daily. But it wasn’t
until Chef Max came into my life that I really took breakfast seriously. I began to see
that besides being a great way to start your morning, breakfast sets the tone for the
entire day. If you have a morning meal with a proper balance of nutrition, you can keep
your energy up for the rest of the day.
Since I do some sort of workout every morning both during the season and off-
season, I have to make sure that I eat right so I am ready to push myself mentally and
physically.
For me, variety at breakfast is important and I really like it when Chef Max
switches things up so I don’t eat the same thing day in and day out. One of my favorite
ways to start the day is with freshly made juice. Another great start for me is a big
bowl of oatmeal and a protein smoothie. I like to mix things up and use various fruits
and greens in my smoothies.
As for our children, mornings are very busy. Chef Max prepares breakfast foods
that are meant to sustain them as they go about their day. We encourage our children to
eat a healthy breakfast of foods they love rather than sugary cereals.
During the week, we keep healthy breakfast options on hand for the kids, like a
yogurt and granola parfait or a bowl of oatmeal with berries. On the weekends, I love
to make a big breakfast for the family. I make the best Spanish omelets, and I serve
these with turkey bacon and whole-wheat toast.
Of course, breakfast time is also when Alexis and I help the kids review for
spelling tests and make sure they are ready for whatever their school day may bring.
Breakfast is very busy in our household, but I love it. I believe that one of the most
important things for me and Alexis is to instill healthy eating habits in our children.
