GAME DAY
“AMAR’E
How I eat on a game day these days sure is different from when I first played ball as a
kid. Back then, I was extremely focused on basketball but I didn’t connect my
performance with my dietary habits. I’d snack on things like chips and ice cream.
After all, I was a teenager. Who didn’t eat like that?
One of the only good things I ate as a teenager was fresh fruit. My grandfather had
peach and orange trees growing in his yard. After school, before practice started, I’d
head over to his house and pick myself some fruit to eat.
Gradually, as I got better at basketball, my eating habits improved. Once I started to
play professionally, I had more resources to help me. The team nutritionist showed me
how to get the most out of the food I was eating. Eventually, I got to a point in my
career where I was able to hire a professional chef. And when Chef Max started to
cook for us, I finally had someone to keep me on track and help me learn to eat and to
cook in a healthy way.
Before a game, I feel my best if I eat a dinner of pasta. While I have animal protein
in my diet during the season, usually I don’t eat meat before a game. I like to have
pasta primavera, Caesar salad, unsweetened tea, and ZICO water. Robust in flavor
and very filling, vegetarian chili is a favorite, too. I need larger portions of protein
and carbs on game days because I burn a lot more calories than on practice days.
After a game, I like to enjoy a grilled rib eye steak, loaded baked potato, sautéed
broccolini, and lemonade. I might even have a glass of red wine with my steak.
Of course, I train year-round, and even if there isn’t practice during the off season, I
need to maintain a healthy diet. When there’s no practice or game, I am more
conscious about how much I eat and I eat a little less. I’m not burning off all those
calories, so of course I can’t eat as much. I think it’s important to be aware of how
much and what we are eating.
