Date Squares (Healthier Version)

Ingredients:
oats
wheat flour, white, all-purpose, unenriched
wheat flour, white, all-purpose, unenriched
oil, canola
butter, without salt
applesauce, canned, unsweetened, without added ascorbic acid (includes usda commodity)
sugars, brown
salt, table
leavening agents, baking soda
cream, sour, cultured
dates, deglet noor
sugars, brown
cornstarch
water, bottled, generic

Directions:
To make the date Filling:
Add the dates, brown sugar, cornstarch, and water in a small saucepan, cook until thick, stirring constantly.
Remove from the heat and set aside.
Preheat the oven to 350F (180C).
Grease a 13 by 9-inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray, line a parchment paper that's cut into 13 by 9-inch size on the bottom.
Set aside.
To make the batter and assembling:
Mix the first seven ingredients together thoroughly in a large bowl.
Mix baking soda in the sour milk, add to the mixture of first seven ingredients, and stir until well combined.
Put half mixture in the prepared pan and cover with the date filling.
Put the rest of the mixture on top and press down.
Bake for 25 to 35 minutes until puffed and the top is golden and brown.
Cool completely on a wire rack, then cut into the squares.
The date squares can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to at least 1 month.
